HOUSING Minister Bill Marmion officially opened the newly refurbished Saumarez Cottage on Tuesday, as part of a Fairbridge sustainability program by young people, for young people.
The State Government funded $500,000 for the renovation of the old Fairbridge cottage, which was revamped by 21 young Aboriginal apprentices and will provide accommodation for those studying in the village.
Second year apprentice carpenter Jaleel Olmand, who cut the ribbon of Saumarez Cottage with Mr Marmion, said he had enjoyed putting his skills to the test refurbishing the cottage.
“I enjoyed it and I picked up heaps of extra skills,” he said.
“It took 21 weeks to finish and there were a lot of challenges.”
Mr Marmion announced a further $500,000 for stage two of the project, to ensure the apprentices are able to complete their training.
