EXERCISING outdoors in winter may not be for everyone, but for the Fit and Flexi group it’s a must.
The new over 50s fitness program was rolled out in June, with more than 60 participants meeting twice a week at Keith Holmes Reserve.
The joint initiative between the Senior’s Recreation Council of WA Inc. Peel branch and personal trainer Meagan Cox, funded by the Department of Sport and Recreation, offers an hour of light exercise for seniors.
“It’s a winter program so it will be going until the end of September and then we’ll have a break,” organiser Jan McGlinn said.
“I had a feeling we would get a good response.
“We do the double dip saltwater aerobics and exercise class in summer and I felt there was a need for them to have something in the winter.
“We were fortunate enough to get Meagan Cox and she put together a light exercise program.
“The response has been very positive.”
Ms McGlinn said the council was also running a Strong On Your Feet program, providing strengthening exercises for those with mobility issues.
The classes are run by volunteers at centres in Mandurah and Pinjarra, with the group hoping to branch out to Waroona.
“We’ve had great success with people taking part,” she said.
“Classes are run by peer volunteer leaders who are trained and assessed by local physiotherapists.
“I really am trying to get Waroona [residents] interested so we can run the classes there.”
