THE Western Australian Special Olympics were held in Pinjarra over the weekend with athletes from around WA competing in a number of events ranging from swimming to soccer.
The festivities commenced on Friday with the official Law Enforcement Torch Run winding its way through the streets of Pinjarra.
The run involved Special Olympic athletes and local community residents and was supported by WA Police Officers.
The official Opening Ceremony followed the relay with all the pageantry of an Olympic event and concluded with a performance by Jonny Taylor.
The games covered 11 sports and acted as a qualifying event for the 2014 games in Melbourne which will lead to the 2015 Special Olympics Summer World Games in Los Angeles.
The games empower children and adults living with intellectual disabilities and are an opportunity for athletes to challenge themselves and improve their self-esteem, confidence and social skills.
