COMMUNITY Services Minister Robyn McSweeney yesterday announced Western Australia’s first-ever Grandparents Day, celebrating the role grandparents play in their grandchildren’s lives.
WA Grandparents Day will be held on Sunday, October 28 and Mrs McSweeney described the day as an opportunity for grandchildren, children and the community to thank grandparents for their continued love and support.
“Grandparents have always played a valuable role in our society by offering care and guidance to their children and grandchildren,” Mrs McSweeney said.
“They have a very special role in children’s lives and Grandparents Day will provide an ideal opportunity to publicly recognise their valuable contributions.”
As part of the celebrations the Minister also announced a pool of funding for community organisations and local government agencies to hold events and activities to celebrate the day across the State.
“I strongly encourage West Australians to get involved and look to hold an event within their communities to celebrate their local grandparents,” she said.
The Grandparents Day grants program supports community events that will attract a diverse range of grandparents and community members. Funding could be used towards activities like workshops; intergenerational activities; seminars and talks; excursions; or even a barbecue.

Grants of up to $2,000 are available to eligible organisations.
Applications reflecting partnerships between community organisations are strongly encouraged.
