With the bumper year almost over, the Mandurah Mail is taking a look back at what made sports headlines in 2016.
Here is an overview of what we featured in our sports section in August.
What happened in August
BASKETBALL: A huge win over the Stirling Senators gave the Mandurah Magic women’s side winning momentum as they clinched their spot in the finals.
BASKETBALL: The Mandurah Magic went on to win one game of their series of three against Perry Lakes in the finals, suffering elimination in the first round.
HOCKEY: Marshall Puzey, Lawson Patten-Williams and Bree Johnson all represented WA at the under 18s national hockey championships in Launceston.
NETBALL: Rockingham claimed a win in the Peel Netball League grand final.
NETBALL: Mandurah-based netballers Ella Sigley and Phillipa Whitney helped WA’s under 15s take out the gold medal at the under 15s national netball championships.
FOOTBALL: Peel Thunder product Hayden Ballantyne made headlines when it was reported that the feisty forward had requested a trade away from the Fremantle Dockers.
SOCCER: Raymond Ellery overcame life-threatening brain injuries and abusive bullying to be selected to represent WA in soccer.
RUGBY: The Mandurah Pirates fell short in their grand final match against an undefeated Rockingham side.
FOOTBALL: The Peel Football League finals kicked off with Halls Head, South Mandurah, Pinjarra, Waroona and Baldivis making the top five.
FOOTBALL: Peel Thunder booked their spot in the WAFL finals, despite coughing up a loss to Subiaco.
BODYBOARDING: Long-time mates Matt Hanks and Henry Gibson took out first and second in the under 16s Australian Bodyboarding Titles.
FOOTBALL: The Peel Thunderbirds youth girls made it three premierships in a row when they took out the top prize.
VOLLEYBALL: Four Mandurah Baptist College students were picked to play volleyball for WA under 15s.
