Mandurah Baptist College will be well-represented on the national stage when four of its most talented athletes don WA uniforms for the School Sport Australia under 15s volleyball championships.
Lewis Peach, Sheehan Howie, Nicholas Whittering and Joshua Howat will fly out to Sydney on Saturday, August 20 to represent the state.
The quartet survived a rigorous selection process to make the team which included two weekly trips to Perth.
They described their selection as elating.
“Definitely felt good to make the side, like all the hard work had paid off,” Peach said.
“It’s exciting to be playing for the state.”
Howie, Whittering and Howat have three years of experience in the sport, while Peach has been playing for less than a year.
All four began playing at school.
“Our school’s really big on volleyball so it’s easy to get into,” Howie said.
“We play with a really good group of people and some of our family and friends are into it, so it’s really enjoyable.”
The boys are the only four players to be picked from a country-based school, joining a string of Perth-based players in the side.
Peach said they were unsure what to expect at the tournament, but had a little knowledge on each of the sides.
“Queensland are really tall and hit quite well, and we’ve been told South Australia jump strongly,” he said.
“We know a tiny bit about each side which hopefully can help us – it’ll be a lot of fun.”
