Three of the Peel region’s up and coming hockey stars have returned from the under 18s national hockey championships in Launceston with a bundle of success.
Marshall Puzey, Lawson Patten-Williams and Bree Johnson all represented WA at the tournament and returned home with medals around their necks.
Patten-Williams and Puzey helped buoy the men’s side to its second consecutive national title.
The WA men finished second in the A-division, behind New South Wales but equal on points. Their 3-2 win against Victoria in the crossover final then set up an epic grand final match against NSW.
Both teams went in as equal favourites having drawn their previous match on day one.
The game was a display of skill in a hard fought contest, with scores level at three-all when the full time whistle blew.
Overtime one-on-ones were then played out, with WA taking the advantage two goals to one to claim the gold medal.
Johnson captained the women’s team to a playoff win against Victoria. Playing for the bronze medal, Johnson’s side crushed their opposition to take a 3-0 win.
All three of the hockey prodigies played their grass roots level with Peel Hockey.
The trio are all currently members of the Hockey WA high performance program which is based in Perth and provides specialist hockey training for selected athletes.
They are also members of the Peel Regional Academy of Sports which provides support for elite athletes from the Peel region in various sports to enable them to complete some of their training within the area.
Johnson and Puzey were also selected to the 2016 national futures group named by Hockey Australia.
The group chooses the top 30 female and male hockey talents from around the nation and places them in a further development program.
