Local volunteers banded together recently to reinvigorate the popular community garden at LandCorp’s Mandurah Junction Estate.
Volunteers donating their time and hard work included members from not-for-profit disability services provider Intelife Group and employees from Bunnings Mandurah and LandCorp.
Bunnings Mandurah also donated soil and seedlings.
LandCorp general manager regional Stuart Nahajski said he was delighted with the involvement of local organisations and expects the work to reinvigorate the garden.
“The raised garden beds were looking a little tired, having endured a hard winter, and we were very happy to have the support of local groups to encourage further community engagement,” he said.
“The community garden was designed as a focal point where people can meet to grow local food, foster friendships and embrace sustainable living.
“We’re hoping local residents will see the change and be encouraged to get their hands dirty and adopt a garden bed. The garden is a place for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to come together.”
The garden will be managed by not-for-profit disability services provider Intelife Group, which is committed to taking part in community activities that teach people life skills and other community living skills.
Intelife area services manager Scott McKenzie said working at the garden would encourage self-confidence for his team members and helped enable them to contribute to the community.
“Helping to revitalise the gardens with other volunteers was a rewarding experience,” he said.
“The garden allows a safe space for our participants to learn new skills and facilitate their development.
“It’ll also allow them to interact with local residents and participate further within their communities.”
The garden now includes rosemary, thyme, dill, basil, strawberries, chives and oregano.
Mandurah Junction, a residential development located adjacent to Mandurah train station, also boasts several more landscaped parks which include playgrounds and picnic and barbecue facilities.
