At their Tuesday meeting, councillors were presented with a series of recommendations aimed at boosting prosperity and growth in the CBD.
The recommendations, including banning smoking in the city’s popular Smart Street Mall received unanimous support.
Council endorsed a proposal to modify the local laws to put the ban in motion.
Once a draft amendment of the City’s Local Government Property and Public Places Local Law 2016 is complete, the matter will be put to council once again.
Once approved, locals will have to stub out cigarettes in the area for good.
It’s unclear, at this stage, when the draft will be completed.
The shopping area has been in the focus during the last six months, after a pledge by council to revitalise the precinct.
The idea was devised by a committee established to reach council’s improvement goal, the Smart Street Precinct Working Group.
Banning smoking was identified, by the group, as a method to help reduce antisocial behaviour and turn the CBD into a family-friendly area.
The recommendations were presented to council in a report by the sustainable development director Tony Free.
