A 29-year-old Mandurah man has been given 60 hours of community work after he pleaded guilty to manufacturing hand-made guns without a licence.
Jason Michael Atwell pleaded guilty to five charges in relation to possessing firearms and one charge of possessing cannabis.
Prosecuting constoble Mick Fallows told the court that Atwell came to police attention after one of his home-made guns misfired and exploded after he was shooting in bush near his home.
Following the incident police seized two “unsophisticated” guns and marijuana seeds.
In May 2009, Atwell was charged with making explosives after he had a “bottle rocket” explode on him and was taken to hospital, Mr Fallows said.
Defence lawyer Russell Mark told the court that Atwell made the guns out of boredom and not to “rob a petrol station or anything”.
He had a spinal injury in 2016 and was receiving worker’s compensation.
Atwell was given a nine-month community based order and 60 hours of community work.
