Mandurah resident Allison Dixon was awarded the Community Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day foreshore celebrations this morning.
A trained fauna handler, Ms Dixon works for free, responding to residents that need an unwanted or injured animal removed.
“I am a bit overwhelmed – it was completely unexpected,” she told the Mandurah Mail, following her win.
“It’s very humbling. Looking after the environment is so important. Without it, we are nothing and it’s important we look after it.”
Ms Dixon said Mandurah was known for its dolphins and its ‘beautiful flora’.

Allison has also helped initiate projects within the City of Mandurah to protect and conserve native local wildlife including the installation of the osprey nesting poles, the installation of ringtail possum dreys and nesting hollows.
She said she was willing and passionate to share her knowledge and skills with others.
Mayor Rhys Williams said it was an honour to acknowledge local people who had put time and effort toward helping others within the community.
“Mandurah is such a special place, made greater by our incredible people,” he said.
“Too often these champions go about making their contribution without being recognised but Australia Day is a fantastic day to celebrate their important role in our community.”
