Mandurah-based surfing youngsters Maverick Wilson and Macklin Flynn carved their way to fourth-placed finishes at the 13th annual Taj’s Small Fries event in Yallingup over the weekend.
The grommet pair surfed strongly off Smith’s Reef, with Maverick taking out fourth spot in the under 10 mixed division while Macklin picked up the same placing in the under 12 boys.
Maverick enjoyed a special success on day two of the three-day event, dropping the competition’s first perfect 10 ride when he sliced and diced his way through multiple forehand turns to notch the score.
“The waves were definitely bigger [on day two], but the lefts were holding the bank nicely and that wave just kept standing up for me,” he said.
“I won the 10 and under division last year and I’d love to go back-to-back.”

Unfortunately a win didn’t pan out for the Mandurah Board Riders youngster, but he still found his way to an impressive finish.
Macklin faced some tough competition going up against Ryan Kainalo, the first Brazilian to enter the event.
Kainalo took the win in the under 12s boys after an impressive few days, while Macklin wasn’t far off the pace.
The annual event, hosted by WA surfing legend Taj Burrow, hit Smith’s Reef for the first time in 2018.
“It’s such a dreamy day down here, I was a bit nervous this morning when we made the call, but the waves have really turned on,” Burrow said.
“It’s just been the most perfect location for a comp, I can’t believe that we’ve never held the event here before.”
Burrow took to giving out free haircuts with his trademark mohawk the flavour of the day with the grommets.
