Fremantle Dockers star Harley Bennell paid a visit to his mob in Pinjarra to support a community driven mental health project for young Aboriginal people on Tuesday night.
The Completing the Circle project, which aims to improve Nyoongar mental health, held its first yarning session earlier this week with Bennell the key speaker.
Fresh off the back of his Dockers debut against Richmond last Saturday, the local AFL star talked to young people about his journey and how he dealt with the pressure of life and being in the public spotlight
Family was a key component of the session, as Bennell highlighted the importance of having support in difficult times.
About 40 young people attended the night, with Shire of Murray community development officer Kelly Shipway praising Bennell for helping to make the project’s first session a success.
“We would like to pass on thanks to Harley for taking time out of his busy schedule to spend time to mentor this awesome young group of people,” she said.
The project was developed by the Pinjarra Aboriginal Community in partnership with the Shire of Murray to address alarming mental health concerns for young Aboriginal people living in the Murray region.
Supported by the WA Primary Health Alliance, the project will run over a one-year period with the hope of improving health and social well-being of Aboriginal people in the community.
