Some of this year’s extravagant and provocative Wearable Art garments shone bright on display during the opening of the City of Mandurah’s new wearable art exhibition.
The display put 40 of this year’s acclaimed pieces on show surrounded by lights, projections, and music across two venues, Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah (CASM) and the Alcoa Art Gallery at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre (MPAC).
Residents, artists and dignitaries gathered at CASM on Saturday night to officially launch the exhibition, which will be open until September 3.
Attendees had the opportunity to browse around CASM, get close to some of this year’s garments and have complimentary food and drinks before seeing four of this year’s creations being brought to life by performers.
Following a brief presentation, the performers guided attendees to the Alcoa Art Gallery, where they had the opportunity to admire more of this year’s garments surrounded by video projections and circus performances.
The exhibition hopes to bring residents and visitors the opportunity to see some of the competition’s best garments from up close, and learn more about the creative and technical process behind each piece.
Mandurah mayor Marina Vergone said the exhibition was a second chance to witness the amazing garments for those who missed out on the showcase.
“The showcase was truly a feast for the senses and we’re excited to continue to showcase the creativity through the exhibition experience added to this year’s competition,” she said.
“I encourage those who missed out on the Showcase to visit the galleries and get up close and personal with the dynamics behind the garments and discover for themselves what all the excitement is about.”
As part of the exhibition, the City of Mandurah will also hold artist talks, workshops and presentations.
Information about the 2018 Wearable Competition will also be available to eager designers at the venues.
The exhibition will run from August 5 to September 3. For more information go to wearableartmandurah.com.
