The South Metropolitan Health Promotion Service (SMHPS) and Peel Trails Group have invited interested organisations and groups to host or coordinate an active recreation event in a park or reserve during October as part of the Peel Region’s first Outdoors October.
The new annual event combines and replaces two previous campaigns – the Peel Paddling Carnival and Walk Over October.
Outdoor October is an annual state-wide initiative from Outdoors WA. It provides an opportunity to engage people on the health, environmental and community benefits of active outdoor recreation.
The 2017 Peel Region Outdoors October program will also serve to showcase the Peel region’s walking and paddling clubs and services; and the parks, waterways, reserves and trails suitable for recreation.
SMHPS will coordinate the development and publication of the overall calendar of outdoor activities, which hopefully by October will be choc-full of interesting outdoor adventures.
The organisation will also provide event hosts with administration, promotion and risk management tools if required.
The SMHPS has provided some ideas for active recreation events:
- A community fun event ( treasure hunt, regatta, have-a-go day or dance festival);
- A themed or educational event (nature experience, cultural, environmental or heritage theme, or awareness and/or fundraising cause);
- Challenges/skill development event (using outdoor fitness equipment, a game of disc golf, group exercise class or obstacle course);
- An activity for particular groups (people, with disabilities, youth, seniors or corporate groups).
