Pinjarra Primary School showed the flag for Aboriginal culture and history this winter, with a series of events to celebrate the region’s rich indigenous culture.
On June 26, the school celebrated the start of NAIDOC Week hitting a milestone; the raising of the school’s first Aboriginal flag.
Students, teachers, staff members and local Aboriginal elders gathered in front of the school’s flag poles for the occasion, before Aboriginal culture took over the school.
Member for Murray-Wellington Robyn Clarke and Aboriginal and Islander education officers from across the region, including the school’s officer Eleanor Hawke, joined the celebrations.
The school was able to install the new flag pole though a donation from Ms Clarke and a grant from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs’ PAL program.
“Pinjarra Primary School now has an Aboriginal flag,” Ms Clarke wrote in her Facebook page.
“I was happy to be able to help contribute to the flag pole so that the school can fly the flag.”
Following a heartfelt Welcome to Country, former school students played the didgeridoo and performed a traditional celebration dance in front of attendees.
The school also celebrated NAIDOC Week from July 18 to July 20.
