Budding environmental protectors have been urged to apply for a range of community rehabilitation grants, all aimed at making sure WA and Peel’s diverse environments stay intact.
Currently, round two of the Peel-Harvey Catchment Council (PHCC)’s community environment grants program is open, with many successful projects coming out of the fund in the past.
The Harvey River Restoration Taskforce received a $49,900 grant to improve the habitat value of the lower section of the Harvey River System, which includes monitoring and controlling invasive weed species.
The Murray Districts Aboriginal Association received $9,941 in funding in order to fund a framework for the continued protection of Bindjareb Park, including identifying existing threats such as Dieback. It has also included a species survey, with the threatened populations of Forest Red Tail and Carnaby’s Black cockatoos now monitored.
The PHCC’s Community Environment grants focus on the organisation's long-standing areas of priority: invasive flora and fauna species, as well the protection of regionally significant and migratory animals and the general ecological character and health of the Peel-Yalgorup Ramsar site.
Other projects, such as funding fencing to prevent stock grazing damage in Murray Valley and controlling weed spread in the threatened Serpentine ecological area.
At the same time, the PHCC’s long-advocated for boost to funding for the Peel-Yalgorup Ramsar Project has commenced, with a network formed between the PHCC itself, community organisations, and local state and federal government.
Meanwhile, the Western Australian Planning Commission through the Department of Planning has opened the 2017/2018 round of the Coastwest grants.
The Coastwest grants are eligible to local governments, Aboriginal land management councils and/or corporations, Coastcare and Landcare groups, schools, NRM organisations and other non-government, non-profit organisations.
The Coastwest grants promote partnerships between these parties in order to ensure the process of protecting and rehabilitating coastal areas is efficient and well-planned.
