With a renewed focus on the visual arts with new principal Chris Wallace, students studying painting and mixed media at Mandurah Catholic College were treated to a visit by two professional artists on Thursday.
Perth visual artist and mural painter Luke O’Donohoe and Mandurah mixed media specialist Helen Coleman spent the day with year 12 students working on their projects for their Art General and ATAR courses.
Visual arts teacher Kerry Harrison said the day ended with the completion of two collaborative works by the Art General students with Mr O’Donohoe, and a collection of four mini-explorations for the ATAR students with Ms Coleman.
“The students were energised and engaged all day,” she said.
“The purpose was to obviously expose students to practising artists and gain skills and processes from their discipline.
“While we all agree art is beneficial for our youth, how students gain access to artists is hard.
“Both Helen and Luke use their daily environments to inspire their imagery and practice. By providing these opportunities we too are encouraging the students to do the same for their own art practice.”
