Western Australian author Linda Bettenay will visit the Pinjarra Murray Library in May to launch her third novel, The Apple Core Wars.

Discussing The Apple Core Wars, which Bettanay based on the true story of a Roleystone family, the author will explain how she uses historical fact to weave historical fiction.
The book follows childhood rivals Jackie Bellamy and Charlie Parkin as they grow up and become POW’s in Japan during World War Two.
The Apple Core Wars contrasts the boys' early lives, when petty rivalries seem so important, against the atrocities inflicted on them as POWs, where life could be spared or taken at any time.
Over their horrendous ordeal a mateship arises, and Jackie and Charlie find they have more in common than divides them, and learn that in times of real adversity, it is only friendship which gets you through.
As a descendant of hills pioneers, Bettenay’s stories emerge from true stories from the early days of Western Australia, and her own creativity.
The event will be held on Tuesday May 9 from 10.30am-12pm, and is free to the public, with light refreshments provided.
