A freak accident outside Mandurah Christ’s Church has left locals a bit shaken.
Suzie Grandell and Kerryn Rakish were each driving down Church St when a section of the old Carob trees that frame the church collapsed onto the road.
Ms Grandell and Ms Rakish were on either side of the collapsed tree, which they thought had taken another car with it.
“I just heard these huge bang, then everything went a bit dark,” Ms Grandell said.
“I couldn’t see anything, and once I realised it was the tree, we rushed out to try and free the car we thought was under there.
“But luckily she had driven around the corner.”
Fortunately no-one was injured.
Ms Grandell’s car recieved only minro damage, despite being less than a metre away from the collapsed tree.
“If it had only been a second earlier, who knows how I would’ve gotten out,” she said.
A spokesman from Christ’s Church said they maintained the trees as much as they possibly could, and there had been issues of trucks and large vehicles clipping older branches.
“We trim the trees all the time, to prevent this, but clearly we couldn’t have stopped this,” the spokesperson said.
“It’s sad, too, because it’s a 100 year-old tree, it’s a big part of Mandurah."
The carob tree is listed on Mandurah’s Significant Trees Register.
