A local teenager will spend seven months in prison after being convicted of strangling his girlfriend.
The 19-year-old man, who will not be named to protect his victim’s identity, appeared in the Mandurah Magistrates Court via video link from Hakea prison, where he had been held in custody for five weeks`.
He pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault, breaching protective bail conditions, disorderly behavior in public and obstructing public officers.
The prosecution said the man assaulted his 17-year-old girlfriend of 18 months at a house in Golden Bay at 1am on January 11, 2017, hitting her face before strangling her for up to 10 seconds.
Later that day, the man breached his protective bail conditions, by sending his victim a text message that read “my sister’s gonna flog you”.
The court was told the man behaved violently in a Northbridge nightclub and resisted arrest on January 14.
As well as the seven months imprisonment, the man was given an intensive supervision order of 12 months.
The man’s lawyer said he was willing to engage in counselling to address his alcohol and violence problems.
