The Peel Thunderbirds have taken their pre-season up a notch since returning from the Christmas and New Year’s break and will get even more intense at a camp at Point Walter later this month.
Since returning on Wednesday, January 4, the team has hit the track with some impressive sessions according to head coach Mark Fenton.
“We’ve been training at both Dower Street and in Falcon and the girls have put in some really solid efforts and made some good progress,” he said.
“We usually go pretty hard for two of the three sessions each week and spend the third doing some light work and enjoying it a bit more.”
But Fenton said his team has a ways to go if they are to crack into the finals after missing out in 2016.
“We’ve still got plenty of work to put in but so far it’s been really promising,” he said.
“We’re trying to take it to a higher level this season.”
The league and reserves side will welcome around 10 players that will progress from the triple-premiership winning youth girls team.
Coach Fenton is hoping those younger players, along with reserves and league regulars, will come together at the upcoming Point Walter camp.
“I want the girls to come away from this camp saying ‘I’m a positive disease, and I want to give confidence to all of my teammates’,” he said.
“It’s about strengthening the mind and picking up plenty of camaraderie.”
The camp, set over three days, will see the Thunderbirds players take on a number of different physical challenges such as rafting and mountain biking.
Former Thunderbirds players and now Fremantle Dockers Kira Phillips, Tayla Bresland and Demi Okely will join the girls at Point Walter.
“It will be great to have our three AFL girls with us again and will give the other girls a real confidence boost,” Fenton said.
“Considering it’s all about taking it to another level, it’s great to have those high-achievers with us.”
The Thunderbirds will resume pre-season training when they return from the camp.
