Keen anglers will hit Mandurah waters for the city’s first fishing classic since a 10-year hiatus later this month.
The 2016 R Marine Fishing Classic, presented by the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club (MOFSC), will see local fish experts hunt for the catch-of-the-day with more than $6000 worth of prize money up for grabs.
MOFSC fishing committee member Gary Russell-Brown said the event was an exciting time on the club’s calendar.
“We haven’t held a fishing classic for more than a decade so we figured now is a great time to get people involved in a fishing and out on the water again,” he said.
“It feels like we haven’t had a spring with the cold temperatures over the past few months and last weekend was our first real warm one, so people are keen get their rods out.”
Fifteen species of fish have been selected for anglers to pursue in the classic, with the club hoping to create a family-friendly atmosphere.
“A lot of the fish we’ve nominated can be found close to shore or even fished for on the shore, so we’re hoping that plenty of families enter,” Mr Russell-Brown said.
“It would be great to see plenty of young kids enjoying getting outside and going for a fish.”
Nominations for the Classic, which will be held on Saturday, November 19, must be lodged at the MOFSC office during business hours or on the competition day at the sign on venue.
The first 50 adults to enter the contest will receive a $10 early bird discount, making their total cost $40. Child registration costs $20.
