The Murray Leisure Centre (MLC) has been recognised for its commitment to saving water.
The centre was endorsed as a Waterwise Aquatic Centre during the Leisure Institute of Western Australia (LIWA) Aquatics State Conference Dinner last month.
The MLC is one of the 27 leisure centres across the state to receive an endorsement as part of the Water Corporation’s Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program.
“The higly accredited Watewise Aquatic Centre endorsement solidifies Murray Leisure Centre’s commitment to reducing its water use and carbon footprint and protecting the state’s water resources,” Shire of Murray president Maree Reid said.
“Being water efficient also results in cost savings not only for the centre, but its patrons as well.”
In order to maintain the accreditation, the Murray Leisure Centre would have to submit a satisfactory annual progress report to the Water Corporation.
Water Minister Mia Davis hosted the certificate presentation, and used the opportunity to congratulate the centres for their achievements.
She said the Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program had helped save the industry more than 700 million liters of water since 2008, the equivalent to 280 Olympic-sized pools.
“All five of the metropolitan centres carried out extensive reviews of how they use water and developed management plans to achieve lasting water savings," she said.
“They identified many ways to save water, from retrofitting their internal plumbing with waterwise showerheads and taps, to carrying out daily water use monitoring and changing the way they maintain and operate the facilities.
“This program is an opportunity for centres to demonstrate their role in conserving water and I encourage all aquatic centres across Western Australia to become involved in this innovative program.”
The centre also received the LIWA 2016 Community Spirit Award for their relief efforts during the Yarloop fires in January.
