Canning MP Andrew Hastie successfully completed the Act-Belong-Commit Dwellingup 100 Mountain Bike challenge on the weekend alongside fellow Solider On teammates former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Member for Tangney Ben Morton, Dawesville Liberal candidate Zak Kirkup and construction executive Julian Ambrose.
The team competed in the D40km Services challenge alongside police, army personnel, firefighters and other uniformed service workers.
Despite their inexperience, team Solider On finished third overall and raised just over $1200 for mentally and physically wounded former service personnel.
Mr Hastie said the highlight of the day was hosting former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, whose good sportsmanship extended to having photos with other riders after falling off his bike.
“Even though we finished with a few bumps and bruises, the comradery between the riders made for an enjoyable day on the trails,” Mr Hastie said.
“Congratulations to all riders, event coordinators and sponsors for a well-run event.”
Mr Abbott and Mr Hastie finished the gruelling 40km race just over two hours and 35 minutes, while Mr Kirkup came in third in the team at just under three hours.
Mr Morton brought up the rear, coming in after three hours and 57 minutes.
Soldier On is a not-for-profit organisation that supports contemporary veterans with physical or psychological wounds to build successful futures by focusing on their physical and mental health, family and community.
“We are very glad to have Mr Hastie and his fellow colleagues and friends on board to support our organisation,” Solider On chief and co-founder John Bale said.
“We hope Mr Hastie’s participation will highlight the importance of rehabilitating veterans impacted by their service and encourage other people to get involved.”
Mr Hastie said every dollar donated will go towards programs to help former service personnel.
