The Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC) was congratulated for its water saving efforts at the LIWA State Conference on Monday night.
The MARC was among the five aquatic centres across the metropolitan area to be recognised by the Water Corporation and the Leisure Institute of Western Australia (LIWA) for their measures put in place to save water.
The centres are part of the Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program, which aims to guide aquatic centres in waterwise practices and recognise their commitment to saving water.
The MARC currently has several water-saving initiatives in place, including water monitoring procedures, pool filter backwashing protocols, push button temperature controlled showers, waterless urinals and dual flush toilets.
Mandurah Mayor Marina Vergone congratulated the team for its commitment and effort.
“Reducing water consumption in the City’s facilities and recreational spaces in important for future sustainability,” she said.
“Water conservation is a big priority for the City, and it’s through ongoing efforts at facilities like the MARC that we’ve been able to demonstrate sustainability towards our most precious resource.”
Water Minister Mia Davis hosted the certificate presentation on Monday, and used the opportunity to congratulate the centres for their achievements.
She said the Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program had helped save the industry more than 700 million liters of water since 2008, the equivalent to 280 Olympic-sized pools.
“All five of the metropolitan centres carried out extensive reviews of how they use water and developed management plans to achieve lasting water savings," she said.
“They identified many ways to save water, from retrofitting their internal plumbing with waterwise showerheads and taps, to carrying out daily water use monitoring and changing the way they maintain and operate the facilities.
“This program is an opportunity for centres to demonstrate their role in conserving water and I encourage all aquatic centres across Western Australia to become involved in this innovative program.”
The City of Mandurah has been recognised as a waterwise council since 2009.
Other centres recognised for their involvement in the program were the Fremantle Leisure Centre, Town of Victoria Park’s Aqualife Centre, Leisure World in Gosnells and Sea Turtle Swim School in Gooseberry Hill.
