Public projects across the Peel region will benefit from a fresh round of grants announced by the regional development minister, Terry Redman.
Two additional fields at Peelwood Reserve will be floodlit at a cost of $300,000 as part of the latest round of funding from the Royalties for Regions program, totalling $1.5 million.
Clubs from Mandurah, Waroona, Pinjarra and Serpentine-Jarrahdale use the facilities to compete.
Peelwood Reserve is also home to three community sporting clubs – Mandurah City Football Club, Halls Head Cricket Club and Peel Hockey Association – with a combined membership base of more than 2200 members.
The new floodlighting would increase opportunities to secure state and national sporting events to promote sport tourism in Mandurah and the Peel.
Mr Redman said the state government would invest $10 million in the scheme in 2016-17, offering grants between $50,001 and $300,000.
“The scheme also helps smaller, community-driven projects that make a real difference in the regions,” he said.
“This round of grants will provide $1.5 million towards 10 projects for the Peel region, including $250,000 to the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale for static water supplies for Jarrahdale's emergency water.
“It also includes $112,000 to the Bibbulmun Track Foundation for the Bibbulmun Track – Murray River bridge.”
Dawesville MP Kim Hames said the funding would benefit Peel’s youth.
“Sports precincts are integral to our community, particularly our youth,” he said.
“Peelwood Reserve is a multi-use facility however currently only one oval at the complex offers quality sports flood lighting.
“Installation of additional sports lighting to the southern ovals at Peelwood Reserve will allow soccer, hockey and cricket clubs to extend their hours of training and competition,” he said.
Peel Development Commission (PDC) chairman Paul Fitzpatrick welcomed the announcement, saying the projects funded were spread throughout the region.
“These grants support infrastructure and services in the Peel, and the recipients represent many parts of the community and of our region,” he said.
“It’s excellent to see the variety of projects that have been funded, from Fairbridge’s CARE school for youth through to Waroona’s Quambie Park social inclusion centre for our aged.
“Culture and tourism have also been supported with Mandurah Performing Arts Centre a funding recipient for their Hubbub Festival and Mandurah and Peel Tourism Organisation winning approval for the Mountain Bike cross country national series.”
City of Mandurah Mayor Marina Vergone also welcomed the grant.
“The installation of floodlighting over two fields at Peelwood Reserve will be a welcome addition to our community recreation facilities,” she said.
“The new lighting will allow our residents and sporting club members to enjoy their sports, leisure and healthy activity into the night.”
