Waroona school cancels France trip after Nice terror attack

France remains in a state of emergency following a terrorist attack in Nice during Bastille Day celebrations on July 14 that killed at least 84 people and injured 100 more.

The Australian Government has advised people travelling to France to exercise a "high degree of caution".

Waroona District Senior High School decided to cancel their August trip to the country following the heightened alerts. 

Despite the warnings, however, six students at the school still hope to visit the country as planned in August, on a community trip, rather than a school trip.

Melissa, a mother of one of the children, told Radio 6PR's Rumour File on Thursday morning she was disappointed the money parents and students helped fund-raise for the trip, would not be released for those students stilling wanting to go.

"We were told if it couldn't be a school event, we would be able to go as a community event," she said.

"Obviously, we would have preferred it to be a school event because there was a lot of research through school... I made my daughter at home do a lot of extra research. 

"She's researched World War One... she's been very excited, she's sat down and watched documentaries with her grandfather – it's been a massive two years."

Melissa said a former teacher at the school was willing to take the children, along with "a couple" of parents to the country, but the school has said it cannot release the funds.

Department of Education regional executive director Sue Cuneo acknowledged cancelling the trip had been disappointing.

"We understand this comes as a disappointment and appreciate the effort put into planning and fundraising for the trip," she said.

"We are discussing options with parents including using the funds raised for students to visit an alternative destination of equal significance or the return of funds raised."
