Five Peel Football League players have been chosen to the initial 29-man WA state country squad, which is set to take on South Australia later this month.
Brendon Jones (South Mandurah), Brad Holmes (South Mandurah), Jesse Gribble (Halls Head), Eddie Dann (Baldivis) and Paul Mugambwa (Mundijong) are all set to don the black and gold for WA.
Peel Football and Netball League general manager Geoff Hiller said the selections were reward for the players’ efforts at both the Landmark Country Football Championships and the PFL regular season.
“It’s really good to see the boys picked – they all now get the chance to represent their state and play a higher level of football than they’re used to,” he said.
“We still had a few players that I think were stiff to miss out, so it really reflects the strength of the league.
No other league had more contributions to the 29-man squad than the Peel Football League.
Regular contributors South West Football League had just three players picked, while the Great Northern Football League also contributed a trio of players.
“It’s great to be the league with the most players chosen,” Hiller said.
“It’s always good for the competition to have more exposure and the positive exposure we receive from things like this is going a long way to help our league.”
The five PFL players survived a selection cut which saw the squad whittled down from 60 players to 29.
A final team of of 22 players will be named in the week leading up to the match, which will be played in Adelaide on Sunday, July 31.
