Calvary Youth Services got a well-deserved upgrade thanks to a community grant by the local Bendigo Bank branch.
The centre, which provides crisis accommodation for 15 to 25 year-olds living on the streets or at risk of becoming homeless, was in urgent need to get new beds but couldn’t afford it within their budget.
“To get the beds it was pretty huge for us at this point of time,” centre coordinator Lisa Dunne said.
“It’s winter and it’s cold and I think even just having new beds are going to make a huge difference comfort-wise for the young people.”
The $2,583 grant has been able to provide the association with seven new beds for the youth living temporarily in the centre, and they will donate the old beds and mattresses to the Halo team in Mandurah.
Calvary Youth services was able to purchase the seven new beds thank to an exceptional deal by Harvey Norman Mandurah team member Benjamin Briscoe.
The association can give shelter up to three girls and four boys at the time for a period of three months to help them exit a crisis situation.
It provides for their basic needs while they try to get on their feet getting a job, studying or undergoing professional training.
Afterwards, the association has four transitional units for young people before they are ready to provide for themselves.
“Some of this young people have literally come off the streets, so if we can provide some basic human needs, some comfort, bed, food, shower, then it’s all that matters,” Ms Dunne said.
