Peel District Cycling Club returned to the Dog Hill circuit in Baldivis last Saturday.
The flat circuit that circumnavigated Dog Hill is a huge change of pace from last week’s race that finished with a climb to Dwellingup.
The weather on Saturday made it challenging with a strong north-easterly wind making breakaways difficult and the sprint to the line into the headwind a question of timing.
A-grade saw a number of breakaways attempted, but none were successful.
As the bunch approached the final bend 400 metres before the finish, Matt Peterson started the sprint early and held the lead all the way to the line to take the win, with Lewis McCrea second and Conor Leahy third.
B-grade was a similar race with a number of attacks, but none succeeded.
The bunch was all together rounding the final bend when a crash took out a number of riders and the race was neutralised.
Riders taking advantage of three event licences to try racing saw the largest field of the season for C-grade with 25 racers taking to the start line.
It was fast and frantic racing, with 24 riders in the bunch when the bell rang for the final 10.7 kilometre lap.
A little over ten kilometres later, twenty riders rounded the final bend.
With less than 200 metres to go Nick Cowie fired out of the bunch to take the win.
Mark Watters was second and Aaron Schonberg was third.
The smaller field in D-grade saw the bunch stay together until the final bend.
Angela Daly sprinted away to take the win with Clinton Hort chasing hard for second and Derek Crowther third.
After last week’s 46 kilometre race ending with a tough climb to Dwellingup, three laps of a flat 10.7 kilometre circuit should have been easy for Joshua Trine.
However he was racing Calum Milne in E-grade.
The pair worked well together until the final bend when Milne sprinted away to take the win, with Trine second.
