Local sports star Ella Sigley is set to don the black and gold for Western Australia’s basketball and netball teams in the coming months.
The 15-year-old athlete was selected for the WA netball under 15s and WA country basketball under 16s after performing exemplary in a pair of rigorous selection processes.
Sigley has represented the state in both sports on many occasions, but said this is the first time she was selected to both in the same year.
“I’m really excited – both championships are only three weeks apart so it’s going to be really full on,” she said.
Sigley will fly out to Kilsyth, Victoria for the basketball championships to be held from July 2-9, before departing for the netball championships in Adelaide in later that month.
The flights will be the culmination of a huge amount of travel to and from training sessions before she was selected to the side.
“We travel to Perth almost every day and Tuesday is really my only day off from sport, but I really enjoy it,” she said.
“It becomes easier to handle as time goes on.”
The Mandurah Catholic College student said one of the biggest hurdles was juggling school work with sport.
“A lot of my studying is done on the road,” she said.
“It can be difficult to get homework done before or after training but it’s just something else you have to juggle.”
She has been playing netball since she was six-years-old, and basketball since she was 11.
Sigley currently plays basketball for the Mandurah Magic’s under 16s team and plays A1 netball for Comet Bay Netball Club, but said she can’t decide which one she prefers.
“Plenty of people have asked me that, which I prefer, and I know I’ll have to pick one that I want to follow sooner or later,” she said.
“But for now I’m just enjoying playing both and will continue until I figure out which one I like most.”
