Mandurah Magic women ride second half to win

The Magic has no doubt benefited from the return of veteran Casey Mihovilovich in recent weeks. They post a 5-1 record with her in the line-up and a 0-6 record without.

But it was a complete spread of the workload that saw them to victory against the Eagles on Saturday night, according to head coach Randy Miegel.

“We have KPI’s set on rebounding and defence, both of which every girl performed really well on Saturday night,” he said.

The Magic were tied with East Perth 33-all at half time, but a prolific second half put the game out of reach.

Mandurah outscored the Eagles 46-21 in the final two quarters.

Miegel said the second half onslaught was an encouraging sign for the team, which continues to grow in confidence after winning three of its past four games.

“Keeping them to just 21 in the second half is brilliant – we started a little slow, but we really got going and played some fluent basketball,” he said.

“The girls executed really well and got some great looks at the basket.”

Those great looks resulted in the women banking 50 per cent of their two-point shots.

In contrast, they limited East Perth to just 36.4 per cent.

Adijat Adams shone for the Magic, piling up 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Annette Davis (19 points, six rebounds) and Emma Klasztorny (19 points, five rebounds), were also productive.

Coach Miegel said the women played a “smart match”, which allowed them to execute on the floor.

“The girls moved around really well on offence and then got back on defence, it was a very pleasing performance,” he said.

The Magic must back their strong form up when they take on the second-placed Joondalup Wolves on Saturday night.

Coach Miegel is looking for the side to show they can overcome quality opposition.

“We were right there with top-side Willetton just a couple weeks ago and only lost by a point, so we can certainly compete,” he said.

“The girls don’t fear any game, but we’re looking for them to show what they’re capable of.”

The game will tip off at 6pm at Joondalup Basketball Centre.
