A man on trial for the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl at Peel Health Campus (PHC) was called a liar by the State prosecutor in Perth District Court this week.
Shaun David Fairfield, 37, was charged with five counts of indecent dealing with a child and two counts of sexual penetration of a child after his alleged victim claimed the former security guard assaulted her while she was a patient.
The alleged offences happened on May 16/17, 2014.
Taking the stand on Thursday, Mr Fairfield admitted he lied to police about engaging in Facebook messages with the girl after the offences were alleged to have happened.
In a police interview he also denied having a picture of his penis on his phone, but a photo alleged to have been shown to the girl on the night she claimed Mr Fairfield assaulted her was later recovered by an online investigator.
The photo had been taken at Peel Health Campus on May 15 in a staff toilet.
Mr Fairfield said he “forgot” about the photo, and denied showing it to the girl, saying it was “something between me and my missus”.
“I don’t bring my private life to work,” he told the court.
When asked why he didn’t tell police about Facebook messages between him and the girl, Mr Fairfield said, “I was a dumba**e”.
Included in the Facebook conversation was a message from the girl saying she wanted Mr Fairfield to touch her “like you did the other night”.
Mr Fairfield replied with, “LOL ha ha ha”.
He also wrote, “Don’t forget to delete, s***head”.
Mr Fairfield said he was “just fobbing it off”, and said he “really felt for her”.
Prosecutor Tatiyajith Karunaratne called Mr Fairfield a liar.
“You took undue advantage of a vulnerable girl,” he said.
“That’s what you did.”
The defence team is expected to call one further witness on Friday before the court hears closing arguments.
The jury will then retire to consider its verdict on each charge.
