MANDURAH Country Club golfer Barry Squires took out the over 70s gross title at the Singapore Senior Men’s Open last month.
The open, held at the Warren Country Club, hosted some of the world’s best senior golfers.
The 70-year-old Squires has a record of success at the championships, after finishing second overall in 2015, fifth overall in 2016 and claiming his over 70s title in 2016.
But despite his impressive record, he said the open presented a number of challenges, especially in terms of the course.
“The Warren Country Club is an extremely difficult course to golf on,” he said.
“Corners and curves make it hard, but teaming it with the humid weather increases the difficulty.”
Squires attributed his success to fitness and a focused mind.
“Keep fit and making sure you’re concentrated is a huge part of it,” he said.
“The weather is hot and humid and you have to stay focused to make sure you can play well.”
Golf has been a passion of Squires’ since he was a 12-year-old boy, but he joked that it is more of a disease.
“It’s a lifetime thing – the passion for it has always been there,” he said.
“But disease is probably a better word, it’s something you can’t really let go of and it won’t let go of you.”
Squires will now return to the Mandurah Country Club, where he plays regularly throughout the week.
