MAYDAY charity store with help from the Mandurah community donated $20,000 to the Lord Mayors Distress Relief Fund this month.
The Davey Street and Barragup charity shops assist more than 100 not-for-profit organisations in the Peel region by selling unwanted goods to give cash donations.
Mayday president Margaret Pettit said the group wanted to help the families who had lost everything in last month’s Waroona and Yarloop bushfires.
“We had quite a lot of wonderful donations come in but they just didn’t want them so at our monthly meeting we decided to donate the money raised that month to the relief fund,” she said.
“It’s the largest donation we have been able to give.
“When you think of it, it’s a lot of $4 blouses to get rid of and it wouldn’t have been possible without community support.”
Mayday has been helping the community since 1973 and has more than 30 volunteers working in the shops.
Ms Pettit said people or charitable groups can write in before the group’s meeting every second Monday of the month requesting help.
“Such a lot of people need our help so we really appreciate the hard work from our volunteers and loyal customers who make Mayday possible,” she said.
