FIVE young dancers from DancEdge Port Kennedy returned from the Gold Coast with a swag of trophies and medals.
Jamie Williams (7), Sophie Yuilll (9), Tiffany William (11), Erin Bullivant (11) and Jessica Mercer (11) all traveled to the Gold Coast in January to compete in the National Championships after qualifying at the regional titles in Perth during October.
Just the second time the Port Kennedy school had attended the event, the National Championships featured numerous categories including tap, ballet, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, song and dance and vocals.
Jamie blew the judges away with her ballet solo to be crowned the national champion in the petite age group (six to eight year olds).
In a special presentation Jamie also received the honour of being a top 10 dancer in her age group across all genres, ranked number seven.
Sophie narrowly missed out on being crowned national champion in her two routines for classical and lyrical finishing in second place.
Sophie also teamed up with Jamie to place second in the classical duo.
Keeping with the group trend Tiffany, Erin and Jessica were crowned national champions for their contemporary trio routine.
It was the first time the girls had performed the routine in a competition.
Tiffany also placed second overall for vocal and ballet and received a gold mark for her lyrical solo.
Erin placed second for her vocal routine and received a gold mark for her ballet solo while Jess came second for her lyrical performance and received a gold mark for her jazz solo.
The five local dancers also formed a five person super group to claim a high silver mark for their jazz routine.
DancEdge Port Kennedy artist director Keirstin Long said she was proud of her young dancers.
“It was a great result but since they’ve got back their work ethic has gone up, they have a real appetite for it and want to do better next time,” she said.
DancEdge Co. Port Kennedy is now taking enrolments.
The boutique dance school caters for two and a half to 21-year-olds and offers classic ballet, jazz contemporary, tap, musical theatre, hip-hop, acrobatic and irish dancing.
