THE Wairua Tipuna Indigenous Performing Arts Group hosted the local celebration of Waitangi Day at the Eastern Foreshore on Saturday, February 6.
The event was a celebration of all things Kiwi, with traditional dancers, food vans, music and entertainment of all kinds.
Waitangi Day celebrates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, when in 1840 the British Empire guaranteed Maori rights to their land and established the Maori people as independent citizens.
Waitangi Day is now celebrated by New Zealanders worldwide as a day of significance to the Land of the Long White Cloud.
Organiser Jo Matthews said that the day was a celebration of traditional Maori culture, contemporary New Zealand heritage and a chance for anyone and everyone to get a taste of Kiwi life.
