A STRATEGIC assessment will be open for public comment from April on the potential environmental impact of future development in the Peel Region.
The aim of the assessment is to outline the future of development in Peel, with both the Perth and peel regions expected to exceed a population of 3.5 million by 2050, an increase of almost 70 per cent of the current population.
The Western Australian Government has released the draft strategic assessment documents, ‘Perth and Peel Green Growth Plan for 3.5 million’ (Green Growth Plan) for a four month public comment period ending on 8 April 2016.
As part of the community consultation process on the draft Green Growth Plan, the Peel-Harvey Catchment Council are hosting a public forum that will enable the community to better understand the strategic assessment process and the resulting Green Growth Plan.
The Green Growth Plan, originally called The Strategic Assessment of the Perth and Peel Region (SAPPR) was originally put forward by the State Government in 2011.
Future development proposed under the strategic assessment will shape the landscape for future generations to come.
For instance, the availability and location of residential housing, the location of major roads and consequences for road users, the siting of industrial development nodes and the development of mineral resources (including sand and limestone quarrying) are set out under the plan.
The forum will include a presentation by the Department of Premier and Cabinet as well as a question and answer forum with representatives from the Department of Parks and Wildlife and Department of Water.
The public comment period is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to comment on how future development plans in Peel will ensure the health of Peel’s diverse ecological system.
The public forum will be held on Thursday, February 11 from 5.30pm at Peel-Harvey Catchment Council, 58 Sutton Street, Mandurah.
RSVP to admin@peel-harvey.org.au or call 08 6369 8800 before February 9 to register.
