TWO Mandurah brothers are state boxing champions after winning their bouts on Saturday.
Chester and Chas Robinson from Ed’s Shed Boxing Club took out the junior 57 kilogram division and youth 60kg division respectively. Chas has been boxing for just over a year and was able to defeat Solomon Price for the state title.
His older brother Chas, who has been boxing for more than two years, defeated Josh Liddelow to claim the state title.
Coach Eddie Kuznicki said it was a great effort from the two boys.
“Chester gave away quite a bit of experience in the fight,” he said.
“We’ve been really testing him against heavy and more experienced boxers.
“He boxed beautifully to take out the win.”
Chester said he couldn’t remember much of the fight.
“It was all a bit of a blur,” he said. “It all happened so quickly.
“I just kept the pressure on.”
Kuznicki said it wasn’t Chas’ best fight but he did enough to get the win.
“His timing was slightly off but his superior strength and condition got him over the line.”
Chas said he was nervous heading into the bout after just missing out on the state title last year.
“I was pretty nervous, everyone expected me to win as I had more experience,” he said.
One of Ed’s Shed Boxing Club’s other fighters Joey Reynolds fell short in his state title match.
“Unfortunately Joey was out of sorts,” Kuznicki said.
“His opponent didn’t let him get into the bout.
“I think it was more of a mental thing than a physical thing.”
Joey said he didn’t feel that confident heading into the fight which hurt his chances of winning.
“Normally I feel really confident but this time I had a lot of doubt, maybe because of the higher level,” he said.
Joey said he would work on it for his next fight.
Kuznicki said the three fighters would go away and work on their skill ahead of another big competition.
“We will reflect on these fights for the Golden Gloves in three weeks,” he said.
