In an ‘egg-cellent’ result for a local farm, Choppers Choice is now the proud home of the Egg Farmer of the Year.
Joyce Chapman picked up this year’s national award for the success she has had, not only in building up the free range egg label, but for overcoming many challenges in the process.
Mrs Chapman, and her husband Terry, purchased the 25-acre property in Meelon in 2000, where they started their 1500-bird business.
Today it has 4000 chickens, laying about 3000 eggs for businesses across the Peel region.
But Choppers Choice was no simple business building task.
The local couple began the egg farm to help with Mr Chapman’s rehabilitation from a bad football accident.
“I needed to work,” Mr Chapman said.
“He felt he must do something,” Mrs Chapman added.
“We didn’t think it would grow the way it did.”
The award is part of the Australian Farmer of the Year awards, which are designed to recognise farmers and farming families for their innovation, professional management and sustainable farming businesses.
