Councillors supported the inclusion of two Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) policies in the City of Mandurah’s policy manual at Tuesday’s council meeting.
The inclusion of the Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Country (WCACP) and the Aboriginal Connection to Country (Land) (ACCP) policies would ensure Mandurah continues to improve to work successfully with the local Aboriginal community, a report prepared by City officers read.
The objectives of the ACCP is to formally acknowledge the Aboriginal people’s connection to the land and waterways, and its importance to them.
It will also be a guide to the City in the decision making associated with works, strategic document preparation, the assessment of private development and submissions to state and federal government.
The aim of the WCACP is to acknowledge the cultural importance of Welcome to Country for Aboriginal people and its importance to Mandurah’s heritage and identity.
It would also enable a better community relationships and understanding, as well as provide direction and support to City officers.
Councillor Ron Wortley said the policies would improve how the City works.
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with our Aboriginal elders and leaders and always found them to be very knowledgable and helpful about the history of our country,” he said.
“I look forward to working with the Aboriginal people and making sure all avenues work together.”
The motion will be up for final approval at full council on June 23.
