LANNA Prestige fighter Damon Nelson claimed the state junior lightweight muay thai title last month.
The 15-year-old fought Walter Lara at the Kingsway Indoor Sports Stadium to claim the title as part of Nemesis 10 series.
Damon said going into the fight – which comprised of five two-minute rounds – he was pretty confident.
“I felt like I had what I needed to win so that was good knowing that but it was still a tough physical fight,” he said.
The fight between him and Walter was determined by rank, just like professional boxing.
The Comet Bay College student was excited to call himself a state champion.
“It's cool to be able to hold that title but to be able to defend it as well would be good,” he said.
Fighting is in the Nelson family as most of his family fights and train together.
He is trained by his dad Andrew.
Now that Damon has the title, he now has to defend it in October and then have a chance at fighting for the national title.
