DONNYBROOK girl Emily Fernley is due to leave for the trip of a lifetime to Gallipoli on April 16 – and she couldn’t be more excited.
Miss Fernley, who is heading to the site with the Premier’s Anzac Tour, said the trip was getting a bit more real as the date got closer.
“I’m looking forward to going around Istanbul and seeing the culture, looking at the mosques and bazaars,” she said. “It will be a good cultural experience.”
The group will camp overnight at the site of the dawn service in order to be there right from the start.
Miss Fernley said she hoped to bring back skills and experience that would allow her to influence other young people to reach out for opportunities.
“You think you’re average until you achieve something like this,” she said. “If you do put yourself out there, you have a chance to achieve these kinds of things.”
Miss Fernley thanked the RSL for their donation, and community members for all of the things that had been made for her to take to Turkey and give as gifts.
These included jarrah coasters handmade by Donnybrook Mens Sheds, and poppies crocheted by her former pre-primary teacher and her aunty.
RSL member Geoff Box said the Donnybrook RSL were very proud to have Miss Fernley representing the Donnybrook community and their sub-branch.
