WITH a recent report finding Mandurah school zones had the highest amount of traffic infringements in school zones, police are urging motorists to slow down and be extra cautious in 40km/h school zones.
In 2014, a school zone in Meadow Springs, as Gordon Road and Slade Street topped the list of the most traffic infringements for the metropolitan area with 1494.
This was followed by the school zone on Park Road and Tindale Street in Mandurah with 437 traffic infringements.
This was followed by a Mandurah school zone, less than two kilometres away, where 437 infringements were issued.
This year police will aim to increase driver awareness in school zones, not just targeting speeding, but also mobile phone use and other distractions, seat belts and pedestrian related offences.
Assistant commissioner Nick Anticich is urging motorists to be extra vigilant and to avoid distractions.
“Our children are vulnerable members of our community, it is up to drivers to be extra vigilant in school zones,” he said.
“Children can’t judge the speed of vehicles, and they may not be aware of their surroundings.
“We will continue to target poor driving behaviour in school zones as we aim to protect our children”.
