MANDURAH surfer April McPherson has her sights set on more state titles after claiming the Peel region’s Emerging Regional Junior Sports Star award.
April received the award at the ANZ Sports Star awards last week, where Australian cricketer Mitchell Johnson won the top award.
She said she enjoyed the night and got to walk on stage and meet Brownlow Medallist Matthew Priddas.
April has been dominating the local surfing scene, winning the state title and coming fifth at the nationals.
She said she wanted to claim more titles and continue surfing.
“My goal is to be the under 16 state champion and get a major sponsor from one of the big brands like Roxy,” she said.
The 13-year-old competed in the under 21 competition at the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro and came fourth.
She won the under 14 HIF junior surfing title in June and won the under 14 and 16 heats in the Wahu Surfer Grom competition in May.
April started surfing at six and said she enjoys being in the water.
She said she did Mandurah Board Riders and won a few times so she entered more competitions.
April is involved with surfing at her school Mandurah Catholic College and competed in the state schools title where they came second to Margaret River.
