Police allege Mr Barton crashed the stolen vehicle he was driving into another car near the Bunbury Forum Shopping Centre at 6pm.
South West Traffic officer-in-charge Sergeant Craig Clarke said the driver failed to stop and police were engaged in a half hour chase.
"Traffic officers pursued the driver and deployed a stinger in an attempt to stop him which he managed to avoid," Sergeant Clarke said.
"He eventually attempted a U-turn near the corner of South West Highway and Willinge Drive where he collided with a police traffic vehicle.
"The police car is very expensive and was extensively damaged."
It is understood the vehicle, a grey Holden Commodore ute, had been stolen from Perth.
Mr Barton was charged with failing to stop, aggravated reckless driving, no authority to drive, stealing a motor vehicle and driving reckless, possession of a weapon and minor drug offences.
In the Bunbury Magistrates Court on Wednesday, police prosecutor Senior Constable Karl Rep lodged an application to oppose bail.
"Police wish for Mr Barton to be remanded in custody for a bail application on Tuesday, November 25 to give officers time to question him about a number of serious assaults which occurred recently in Perth and are believed to be linked to [Tuesday's] offences," Senior Constable Rep said.
But duty lawyer Fiona Walsh successfully argued that protective measures could be put in place to ensure Mr Barton could be released and still assist the police.
Magistrate Elizabeth Hamilton said Mr Barton came to the court on a number of serious matters which potentially attract a mandatory term of imprisonment.
She also revealed he was placed on a 12 month suspended term of imprisonment in July 2014 for burglary offences.
"In the circumstances I am of the view that bail ought to be granted with conditions to ensure he is not a flight risk," Magistrate Hamilton said.
Bail was set with a $7000 personal undertaking and a $7000 surety.
Mr Barton must reside at an address in Glen Iris, report to the officer-in-charge of the Bunbury Police Station on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and at all time be within a 10 kilometre radius of the Bunbury Police Office.
He was also instructed not to contact any witnesses involved in the alleged offences.
Mr Barton will reappear in the Bunbury Magistrates Court on December 12.
