WHAT’S in a name?
For Timmy Trumpet, Australia's latest addition to the increasingly popular dance music scene, it represents more than just his on stage personality but his history as well.
While the DJ behind the smash hit Freaks may be considered the latest and greatest in dance music right now, it has not been without any hard work.
Like the majority of overnight successes, Timmy Trumpet has been years in the making.
Although he has been travelling the world, performing the audiences longing to hear his beats, Timmy Trumpet's journey began far away from the nightclubs and festival which he now performs at.
“I actually started in jazz music,” he said.
“At the age of 13 I was touring the world with it.
“I couldn’t get enough of it and I actually hated DJs.
“But then I thought, if you can’t beat them, join them.
“I’ve always enjoyed dance music and it’s not all that different to jazz.
“Any jazz musician knows how to improvise music and that’s what DJing is about.”
Jazz is not only influencing the spontaneity in the musician’s music but also the presence of the trumpet which he plays during sets.
“People don’t actually believe I play the trumpet as well as DJ,” Timmy Trumpet said.
“They’re surprised when I bring my trumpet out at a gig.
“It’s not a new thing; there are many DJs who play instruments during sets.
“There are DJs who play sax and DJs who play the bongos.
“I say the main thing is really, just do what your love, even if it’s not the norm.
“Look how far it’s got me.
“You are a product of your own making.”
Staying true to his jazz background, Timmy Trumpet continues to include a wide range of influences in his music with classical, dub step, reggae and disco all making an appearance.
Complete with his signature trumpet in hand, he said it was important for him to embrace everything which comes his way to inject an “authentic sound into dance music”.
And when you don’t see him with a trumpet in his hand, you can see him kite surfing – something which he hopes to be doing off the Mandurah and Perth coasts while here this weekend.
“I love sailing and kite surfing and anywhere of the west coast is good for that,” Timmy Trumpet said.
“So I’m going to take a couple of days out while I’m there just to chill.”
Timmy Trumpet will be at Toucan Club on Friday.
