ARTIST Dorothy Newland’s latest exhibition Halcyon Days will open at Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah (CASM) on Saturday.
It’s her sixth solo exhibition, her second at CASM, with her work now acquired by both private and public collectors.
Newland has spent the last 12 months in residence at CASM where the space has allowed her to push and explore the physical qualities of paint, colour, luminosity, line and shape.
After working in education for many years and painting as a hobby, Newland completed her visual arts degree 18 years ago and has been painting professionally ever since.
She receives inspiration from many areas including people, places and experiences and has traveled extensively.
Newland moved to Mandurah four years ago to allow her to combine her love of paint and colour with her joy in the things around her and the landscape she now lives in.
She said Mandurah and its surrounds had much to offer, including rivers and the estuary, the bush, the wetlands and public gardens.
“I feel I never have to leave the region because there is a life’s work in front of me here,” she said.
Newland is often described as an abstract painter, but she said not everything had to be described in detail.
“If a poem or a piece of music is not spelled out, it doesn’t matter,” she said.
Halcyon Days runs from Saturday to September 28 at CASM, with the official launch on Sunday at 2.30pm.
Newland will host an artist talk on Thursday, September 11 at 6pm.
