A NEW volunteer service has rolled out in Mandurah, aimed at enriching the lives of people at risk of being socially isolated.
Volunteer agency People Who Care’s Community Visitors Scheme matches aged care residents or those living alone deemed at risk of becoming isolated with volunteers to build a community connection.
People Who Care Guilford manager Cathy West said new funding meant the program could be expanded to Mandurah as the first site to include private homes.
“If [people in their own homes] don’t get out they can feel isolated,” South West regional manger Annabelle Calvert said.
“Living independently is fantastic if you live well and can interact with people,” Ms West said.
“It could be as little as having a cup of tea. Families could be concerned that their loved ones are lonely.”
Ms West said her mother was in the program as she was an only child without a lot of family in her mum’s life.
“It can make a huge difference in someone’s life,” she said.
The service can give reassurance to families their loved one would still see someone if they were away.
The service aims to pair a volunteer with an individual that has similar interests and hobbies.
“It’s not just rewarding for the person but also the volunteer,” Ms West said.
People Who Care are seeking residents in their own homes and nursing homes who would benefit from the service as well as people who wish to volunteer.
“It’s such a genuine service and way to give,” Ms Calvert said.
